Government Securities:

  • Government Securities or G-Sec are a low-risk investment option backed by the government of India. They are issued in the form of treasury bills (T-bills) which have maturity from 7 days to a maximum of 364 days and bonds, whose maturity ranges from a year onwards. 
  • These bonds may have fixed interest rates that are determined based on market-related changes. Since these are backed by the government of India, there is no risk of default if you hold it to maturity. However, it carries market risk, and prices change as per supply demand.

To get started in Indian financial market an NRI Investor must open following accounts: 

  • An NRE / NRO bank account and a PIS account.
  • A Demat Account with a Depository Participant
  • A Brokerage / Trading account with a Broker.

  • Valid Visa / Permanent ID card (If the passport is issued from a country other than the country in which NRI resides)
  • PIO / OCI Card
